Over the Collar Dog Bandana

Charley Bandana ModelI am re-learning the basics of how to use a sewing machine.  This is my first sewing craft that I have made without much error.  It’s not as simple as making a pillow, but it is close.  I learned how to sew again thanks to this blog called Tilly  and the Buttons.  The “over the collar” pattern and idea came from THIS site.  I have adapted a little bit from it, but you may find that one easier to follow then my steps.  By the way, this project requires an iron.  If there was a cheat way around having to iron, I would have found it…but, it’s the only way. Download and print my original pattern HERE  or Download my “new and improved” pattern HERE!

Lay out the pattern onto the fabric of your choice. I prefer patterned fabric because it helps hide my stitches (that are sometimes a little less than perfect).

Fold in the edge on each side (as pictured) and iron it until it's completely flat.
Fold in the edge (#1 on pattern) on each side (as pictured) and iron it until it’s completely flat. Wrong side of fabric should be facing up!

Sew the small flaps down.

Bandana 3
Fold the fabric in half. Sometimes the point doesn’t match. This is not biggy! Main thing is to fold it with the “wrong side” facing out. Iron the fabric, especially at the top crease.

Bandana Sew
Sew along the 2 edges (labeled #2 on pattern).

Bandana Inside Out
Here you can see the stitches that I made on the two edges.
Turn the bandana "right side" out. Be very careful not to pull too hard!

One more final ironing...
One more final ironing…And this can be considered “complete,” but I like to do one more step…
I prefer to make one more stitch line. This is an optional step. I find it helps it lay better on the collar. It's a straight stitch from one collar opening to the other.
