A garbage disposal can stink really bad, and it can make the whole kitchen and even the house smell like the city dump. At a grocery store, I asked one of the workers how they kept their area from smelling (they worked in the Fresh Seafood Department) . They told me that everyday they cut up a lemon or two and stick it down the disposal and turn it on. Ever since then, I have tried to use this handy tip on a monthly basis. It is fantastic! Sometimes I put a few ice cubes with the lemons and chase it with 1/2 cup of baking soda (usually just when there is a lot of gunk down in there). Of course, I am running the faucet the whole time the garbage disposal is on. It is even more awesome if you can find a sale on lemons and then freeze them for future use. This is a lot cheaper than buying the disposal cleaner they sell in stores, and it is environmentally friendly.
